Job Description Marketing Director, Communications and Marketing Team RMI’s Marketing Director is responsible for developing and ensuring the effectiveness of marketing efforts across our diverse portfolio of topics, audiences, and channels.

This role will help guide and advance audience analytics and our multi-channel marketing strategy — including promotional email, social media, paid ads, and others. The goal: To expand audience engagement globally, identify the right audiences, inspire them to act on our market-driven solutions to the climate crisis, and evangelize this progress internally.

The ideal candidate will be a sharp marketing professional, a superb communicator, a gifted manager of people, and a creative problem-solver. The role will manage and mentor two small teams, including out audience insights and email marketing team along with our social media team. The role reports to our senior director of storytelling.

They are a clear, strategic thinker with a proven track record of marketing success, paired with strengths to lead, inspire, cultivate talent, and build internal relationships. They will help develop and deliver organizational-level communications goals that are on brand. They are committed to a collaborative approach across multi-disciplinary teams to expand and execute a multi-channel marketing strategy.

The ideal candidate will also bring fluency in and a passion for the energy and climate space. Unbound by conventional thinking, this leader loves to geek out on engagement data as much as they have a strong sense of narrative, all in service of big-picture strategy.

Responsibilities: Overall

  • Create a cohesive and effective marketing strategy to lift RMI’s overall brand and mission, while balancing and advising marketing efforts across our mix of program work and related audiences, toward the end of building the funnel to increase our overall audience and new donors.
  • Working closely with communications team leadership, develop and own RMI’s paid media experience and strategy via plans that are audience-centric, prioritize key messages, and generate creative concepts and strategies that will deliver on organizational goals.
  • Set direction for RMI social media; work with team to advance our social presence; direct social audits to ensure best practices, including but not limited to consulting on content creation, community engagement, partner/ advocate /influencer collaborations, and more.
  • Direct and oversee marketing strategy and initiatives, including paid and owned social, email, web, and SEO/SEM.
  • Lead marketing and social teams by mentoring and imparting knowledge to develop team skills and elevate RMI’s marketing practice areas to greater success and sophistication.
  • Collaborate with web and creative teams to meet organizational goals and enhance web experience.
  • Elevate the quality and impact of marketing efforts through the strategic use of audience research and data to inform compelling marketing messaging that amplifies our research, lifts our brand, and motivates the right audiences.
  • Present and provide reports, strategies, and campaigns to leadership teams, encouraging adoption, and highlighting successes and areas for improvement.

Brand

  • In consultation with key content and creative teams, develop a comprehensive brand positioning strategy that aligns with RMI’s objectives in ways that lift brand awareness and advance fundraising efforts.
  • Collaborate with the creative team to establish strategy for evaluating new brand requests; coordinate with leadership to determine when establishing a new brand is appropriate.
  • In collaboration with RMI’s creative director and team, ensure consistency in brand identity.
  • Collaborate closely with media director and media team to who will be managing: Sponsored content; SMTs, paid radio tours; event sponsorship related to media.

Email and Social Marketing

  • Direct RMI’s email marketing strategy to build traffic, boost engagement, and enhance execution, ensuring technical execution, quality, reporting, and optimization.
  • Champion the advancement of audience segmentation throughout newsletters, stewardship journeys, retention/reactivation programs, and triggered campaigns.
  • Partner closely with allied teams (events, development, programs, IT, and Salesforce admins) to ensure we optimize backend systems (CRM, deliverability certifications, etc.) to develop a comprehensive view of our audiences.
  • Lead paid strategy and oversee paid campaign manager on Meta, LinkedIn, Google, Twitter, and other digital channels, such as podcasting.
  • Be hands-on with campaign optimizations and work closely with campaign managers to problem-solve effectively.
  • Responsible for overall platform marketing budget and efficiency metrics.
  • Develop SEO/SEM strategy and oversee vendor(s) for all PPC advertising.
  • Assist the development and implementation of social media policies and guidelines to mitigate potential risks, including that RMI social content complies with relevant regulations.
  • Consult on crisis communications for social and owned — in partnership with media and crisis comms teams — to refine how we respond to negative situations.

Analytics & Audience Insights

  • Develop systems and processes to trace audience journey via content to drive ultimate action.
  • With audience insights manager, develop metrics reports to capture every campaign, including ROI, to deepen audience awareness and optimize campaign results.
  • Together with audience insights manager, oversee research and analysis to map audiences and evangelize to internal teams on how to best use audience maps.
  • Establish KPIs and analytical frameworks to assess marketing effectiveness and guide strategy, ID trends and share insights to inform growth strategies.
  • Set metrics and frameworks to monitor, measure, and optimize campaign performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in marketing, communications, or related field and/or appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • 10 years of marketing, brand, and content leadership for an organization focused on energy, climate, sustainability and/or related areas.
  • Excellent problem-solving and relational skills; superb verbal and written communication skills with a high degree of comfort interpreting results and communicating insights effectively.
  • Proven track record of running integrated, multi-platform marketing campaigns, including managing multi-platform social media channels, paid media, and SEO /SEM.
  • Experience with strategic planning and implementation of digital tools to support audience research, metrics reporting, and data collection/visualization.
  • Demonstrated success overseeing email marketing programs and implementing deliverability best practices, including GDPR compliance.
  • Able to thrive in a remote, highly matrixed environment across various teams; influence and partner across a large organization to drive change.
  • Nice to have: Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; Sprout and related social trends tool; familiarity with Monday.com, Trello, Basecamp, Asana, or other project management software.

Location

We are a remote-ready organization with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado; and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States.

We provide you with the essential IT equipment plus a one-time home technology payment and a monthly work from home/commuter allowance to ensure you have a comfortable home office set up and necessary supplies.

We love seeing each other in person! We occasionally gather for shared time together like retreats and learning experiences. Be ready to travel for occasional in-person meetings (and of course, we cover travel costs). Some roles may require more travel, which will be discussed during the hiring process.

Compensation   

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. A new Marketing Director based in the U.S. has a salary range of $139,392-$171,801. You would also have an additional 20% bonus target!
