Job Description
The transportation sector, currently the largest source of GHG emissions, is on the verge of an unprecedented transition that creates opportunities to re-imagine a transportation/energy system that is more convenient, efficient, and equitable than what Americans experienced historically. The multi-disciplinary Transportation Energy Transition Analysis (TETA) group within NRELs Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences (CIMS) has pioneered modeling and analysis that improve our understanding of long-term transformations of transportation and mobility systems (e.g., transition towards clean energy and sustainable solutions), supporting infrastructure (e.g., EV charging networks), and their integration with the broader energy system.
Do you have a strong analytical background and a passion for improving energy and transportation systems? We are seeking a senior modeler/analyst to contribute to and lead efforts that bridge the gap between industry, government, and academia.
This cross-cutting position will provide opportunities to collaborate across NREL and conduct analysis at the intersection of the transportation, infrastructure, and electricity systems. Specifically, this position will require: 1) developing and using transportation system models to estimate energy use, emissions, EV charging infrastructure requirements, and related topics, including vehicle-grid integration;
2) contribute to design, perform, and document results from quantitative analysis to provide insightful results and document them in scientific publications and stakeholder briefings; and 3) envision and secure funding for future research opportunities.
In this exciting role, you will contribute to and over time lead projects leveraging tools like EVI-X and TEMPO that are largely used to support multiple clients (e.g., DOE, EPA, CEC) and inform key National and local stakeholders. We are seeking passionate candidates with a robust understanding of transportation and energy systems and with experience in the execution of projects that advance the science and/or implementation of advanced technologies in those systems. Candidates must have experience developing software tools and performing analysis, be an excellent verbal and written communicator, proven ability to self-manage their time and be proactive in problem solving and have experience working collaboratively with diverse teams and interacting with clients.
The successful candidate will also have opportunities to support the groups internal development of strategic priorities and initiatives to support the labs vision, strategy, and execution. This senior-level position will also require the expansion of the teams client base and creation of project proposals to support growth.
The job responsibilities include:
  • Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team to explore clean energy transition pathways for transportation systems and related infrastructure by performing quantitative analysis and synthetizing insights and results
  • Use and improve existing models and tools to derive, visualize and communicate analysis results for current projects using programming languages including Julia, Python, and R.
  • Publish results in top technical journals and conference proceedings; present work at conferences, symposia, and other relevant meetings.
  • Contribute to developing new relationships and pursue funding opportunities.
  • Mentor/guide contributions of interns and/or junior staff
