Job Summary

The VMWare Engineer (Hybrid) role is a direct report to the IT Infrastructure Real-Time Operations Supervisor within IT infrastructure group. The VMWare Engineer (Hybrid) role will be involved in the full systems life cycle and responsible for designing, coding, testing, implementing and supporting software and systems. This role will work closely with Business Analysts and Group Product Managers to understand the business and technical requirements that drive the analysis, design and operations of the technical solutions.
This role is a hybrid role and may require presence in a PSEG location across the state of NJ. Currently the members of this team work mostly remotely. The presence in the office may be on multiple continuous days with no end date known. The role can be performed remotely and may continue as such, at PSEGs discretion, in the absence of the need to come into a PSEG office.
The role is associated with technology used in 24×7 business operations. Ability to be part of a call out rotation, including evenings, weekends and holidays is required. The call out rotation is defined ahead of schedule to accommodate various considerations and the schedule may be adjusted to emergent needs, including weather storms that require elevated attention to technology incidents and resolution.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and/or business analysis in support of technology solutions and technology infrastructure.
  • Analyzes simple to moderately complex inquiries. Determines appropriate technical area or vendor to resolve problems. Makes suggestions for improvements.
  • Responsible for executing smaller projects and/or support tasks and typically maintain a high level of direct stakeholder and end user interaction.
  • Works closely with PSEGs management, end users, other systems technical staff and vendors in problem solving.
  • Consults with the immediate supervisor and other IT professionals when the appropriate course of action is unclear or a more significant problem is suspected.
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining production systems, as well as providing hardware/software equipment support. This includes monthly patching, vulnerability remediation, performance tuning, incident resolution etc. Ensuring that the tasks complete within the defined completion or resolution duration.
  • Provides technical support and guidance to end users and system areas through consulting, teaching and publication of documentation.
  • Participates with end users and other development areas in the design and implementation of new or modified server/OS/virtualization infrastructure.
  • Analyzes server/OS/virtualization infrastructure systems, take corrective action if possible and/or determines if vendor assistance is required. (Initiate and coordinate corrective actions)
  • Performs related duties as assigned or requested.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelors degree in engineering, Computer Science or a related field i.e. STEM.
  • 2-4 years of experience within the IT field or an industry with reliance on technical expertise. Some portion of the experience with VMWare engineering, operations or both.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements to technology solution requirements of mostly low complexity technology solutions.
  • Strong technical proficiency in information technology/computer disciplines.
  • Strong MS Office skills (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access.
  • Self-starter with the demonstrated ability to learn new technical concepts quickly.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, IT management and staff.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain working relationships with peers and end users.
  • Good communications, consultative and interpersonal skills, including oral, written and presentation; teamwork, collaboration, facilitation, and negotiation, with the ability to work.
  • Ability to work in a 24×7 environment with callout availability required.

Desired:

  • Graduate degree or MBA
  • Experience with mission critical technology solutions.
  • Working knowledge of utility industry including transmission, distribution (electricity, gas, water) and NERC CIP regulations.
  • Understanding financial principles as they apply to technology investments such as cost to achieve, cost to operate, depreciation, maintenance etc.
  • Experience working with or related coursework to write software code in both web and client/server environments such as: Software Languages: Java, .Net, C, C++, HTML, XML, SQL, VBA, Node.js, Swift. Operating Systems: Windows, Linux, VMWare.
  • Experience with scripting and automation with the expectation that the candidate will be an active participant in the emerging automation culture that is present in our organization.
