ENGIE Global Energy Management and Sales (GEMS) is responsible for managing the portfolio of gas, electricity, congestion revenues rights and environmental products for ENGIE, across geographies. More recently, GEMS has extended his scope to also manage all the market risks (energy, congestion, RECs, ancillaries) generated by the Renewable and Battery Storage Assets owned by ENGIE North America, which includes wind farms, solar farms, and storage units. The Power Portfolio Management team is precisely the group in charge of these activities.

The Battery Storage Portfolio Manager will be responsible for managing and growing the groups capabilities to optimize the daily trading and dispatch of its battery energy storage systems (BESS) in power markets, with an initial concentration in ERCOT. Regular duties include (i) determining and executing trading positions in coordination with BESS dispatch capabilities, including buy/sell commitments for real-time, day ahead, and ancillary services markets, in conjunction with various proprietary and third party software and forecasts, (ii) interfacing with the Real Time desk & scheduling systems to implement market positions and timely submit plans and associated adjustments, and (iii) coordinating market activities with the company’s risk management policies and procedures. Primary ongoing responsibility is to capture learnings from operations and implement into daily trading decisions and optimization applications.

As an integral part of this team, the Battery Storage Portfolio Management Advisor performs a series of tactical and strategic actions focused on maximizing assets’ P&L while preserving healthy risk levels.

This position sits in Houston, TX and will report to the Head of Battery Storage Portfolio Management for North America.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop BESS trading & bidding strategies based upon proprietary applications, forecast inputs, knowledge of market design and BESS technology constraints to determine optimal market deployments of BESS on a day-to-day basis
  • Implement process to execute daily trading & scheduling decisions for next-day BESS operation in the ERCOT market. Scheduling options will include hourly commitments in the Day-Ahead Energy Market, Day-Ahead Ancillary Service market, or allocation of capacity into the Real-time market for price-based dispatch
  • Coordinate with the Real Time desk to ensure that BESS assets are scheduled and managed in the most effective manner under prevailing market rules, and establish ongoing performance process with the RT desk to continuously track BESS performance, compliance, and charging/discharging cash-flows
  • Leverage your skills in statistical analysis, market fundamentals, ISO protocols (ERCOT), and regulatory issues to drive the insights into historical and forward pricing curves for power, ancillary services, renewable energy credits, and all other cost components of retail electricity products
  • Establish communication protocols to minimize any gaps between BESS commercial operations activities analysis/scheduling/market commitment and BESS asset management activities deployment/dispatching/performance
  • Monitor and evaluate ISO proposals regarding operating rules for BESS market participation, particularly with respect to new Real Time Co-optimization rules currently under discussion by ERCOT stakeholders
  • Analyze market data to develop expertise regarding ISO dispatch processes, ancillary service market dynamics, and strategies to use market tools to manage risks of limited-duration exposure (e.g. the ability to manage exposure through a portfolio of multiple BESS assets)
  • Articulate with Risk Group the development and improvement of the risk metrics, and the proper representation of assets and existing hedges s in our management systems.
  • Collaborate with the Optimization & Analytics Engineers to develop and automate iterations to existing algorithms for BESS operations & optimization modeling solutions.
  • Support the Portfolio Mgmt. group & leadership through evaluation and recommendation of new operating strategies for battery storage, such as revised bidding and hedging strategies
  • Perform performance analysis and review of all BESS market activities and outcomes in energy and ancillary service markets to support ongoing improvement in BESS performance and market positioning, and to provide information to other internal Engie teams & business units (Settlements, Operations, Asset Management) to inform BESS performance assessments.
  • Coordinate with our Congestion Modeling teams to simulate scenarios, analyze results, and propose strategies to hedge congestion (of the storage itself, but also other ENGIE renewable assets)
  • Support Business Development teams, offering views on particular ISOs protocols, regional congestion landscape, price of the products commercialized, available incentives, etc.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor degree in a quantitative discipline
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in business
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in control room operations, power trading, generation scheduling would be a strong plus.
  • Experience in the market structure and protocols of ERCOT (a knowledge of a second market is highly appreciated)
  • A preferred statistical foundation would be a strong Plus. (i.e., Linear Regressions, Multivariate Statistics, etc.)
  • Experience using: Excel (with VBA) and Python (SQL is a great differential)
  • Resourceful, ability to use a variety of tools, data sources, and systems; and inherent curiosity to procure and test new resources
  • Deadline driven with project management skills for cross-organizational coordination
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy

  • Salary Range: $114,135 – $191,100 USD, annually
  • Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors
