Job Description
NREL is seeking to hire a Buildings and Energy Researcher for its team at the NREL Alaska Campus. Located in the heart of Interior Alaska, Fairbanks is surrounded by mountains, trails, and rivers, as well as vibrant music, culture, and community. With 22 hours of sunlight in the summer and cold, snowy winters, Fairbanks is an outdoor lovers’ paradise. The NREL Alaska Team is housed in the farthest-north LEED Platinum building in the world, a living laboratory for solar, geothermal, biomass, thermal storage, and energy efficient technologies.
The selected candidate will play a crucial role in applying their scientific expertise and project leadership skills to ensure the safe and successful execution of projects, aligned with DOE and NREL’s research mission. They will be an integral part of the Applied Research for Communities in Extreme Environments team, contributing their expertise, research, and analysis to advance the clean energy transition in remote communities and extreme environments. The role may also involve supporting various NREL initiatives, including emissions inventory, air quality modeling, health impact analysis, and environmental justice. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to coordinate and communicate effectively with a wide range of technical stakeholders, including research engineers, scientists, principal investigators, DOE clients, and industry research partners.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Analyze spatial data in GIS and create maps for publication.
  • Lead and support proposal development for potential funding opportunities to further NREL’s mission.
  • Research the impacts of energy and building decisions on public health.
  • Lead impact assessments of building and energy systems; methods may include air quality analysis, life cycle assessment, and risk assessment.
  • Prepare, draft, and edit research and analysis reports.
  • Publish technical papers in relevant journals.
  • Analyze measurement and monitoring data and perform community technical assessments to identify on-site energy technology opportunities.
  • Perform data analysis, including specialized analysis of energy-related research projects, cluster detection, intensity mapping, and regression models.
  • Under the guidance of senior staff, design and analyze new building and energy systems and assess their impact on communities.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments on building systems and components within NREL’s laboratories.
  • Manage projects, including creating schedules, inputting planning data into NREL’s planning and financial tools, monitoring progress, and tracking costs across multiple research projects.
  • Conduct literature reviews, synthesize findings, and interview homeowners, contractors, and industry experts to gather information.
  • Develop and edit educational materials for various stakeholders, including students, homeowners, builders, and practitioners.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and develop protocols and tools for on-site energy technology assessments.
  • Provide support for technical assistance, engagements, and related activities.
  • Lead projects and support NREL program managers and principal investigators in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy research, programs, and projects.
  • Collaborate within an interdisciplinary research team.
Additionally, the candidate will have opportunities to:
  • Take on leadership roles in projects and collaborate with research personnel and partner organizations on upcoming research initiatives.
  • Establish connections with relevant entities and engage with current sponsors to secure additional research funding.
  • Prepare proposals and present results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and other stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications

For a Researcher III:

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

For a Researcher II:

Relevant Master’s Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS Systems
  • Demonstrated experience with applied spatial statistics
  • Outstanding interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working in extreme environments, such as in rural Alaska or other similar regions.
  • Demonstrated experience with long term collaborative research initiatives

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher III ARCEE / Annual Salary Range: $69,800 – $125,600

Job Profile: Researcher II ARCEE / Annual Salary Range: $64,100 – $105,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidates education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employees salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
