Job Description
NRELs Residential Buildings Research Group is seeking a full-time researcher to support laboratory experiments, conduct building energy modeling and analysis, and to interface with frontline communities to develop and disseminate equitable, beneficial, decarbonization strategies for residential buildings.
The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of experienced NREL researchers to support projects in the area of building science with a focus on enhancing cost-effective solutions for transforming energy use in residential buildings. Project and task assignments will focus primarily on leading or supporting laboratory experimentation, conducting analysis, and supporting communities seeking to decarbonize their housing stock. Elements of the projects may include overseeing and/or conducting experiments in laboratory settings, conducting analysis using building energy modeling software and data, and providing technical assistance to communities.
We seek an exceptionally curious engineer with experience and background in advanced energy systems, lab experimentation, building energy modeling and analysis, and relaying technical information to wide range of audiences. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of advanced energy systems, including residential building energy systems, experience working in a research laboratory setting, and interest and ability to effectively communicate technical information to general audiences. Candidates with interest and/or experience in the rapidly evolving area of equitably decarbonizing the US housing stock taking into consideration both embodied and operational carbon are strongly encouraged to apply.
Organizationally, this position resides in the Residential Buildings Research Group within the Building Technologies and Science Center. Job duties and responsibilities may include:
  • Leading and supporting experiments in laboratory and/or field settings.
  • Modeling and analyzing advanced energy systems include building energy systems.
  • Managing and analyzing large data sets.
  • Conducting life-cycle analysis of buildings.
  • Providing technical assistance to frontline communities developing or implementing decarbonization plans.
  • Developing, organizing, and relaying technical information to general audiences.

Basic Qualifications

Researcher III:

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Researcher II:

Relevant Master’s Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
For a Researcher II:
  • Background in science, engineering and/or energy systems.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting experiments involving building energy technologies in a research laboratory.
  • Demonstrated experience modeling and analyzing advanced energy systems, including building energy systems.
For a Researcher III:
  • Strong Background in science, engineering and/or energy systems.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting experiments involving building energy technologies in a research laboratory.
  • Demonstrated experience modeling and analyzing advanced energy systems, including building energy systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience conducting carbon life-cycle assessment of buildings.
  • Experience using Python and SQL to conduct data analysis.
  • Ability to speak Spanish.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 – $143,300

Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 – $120,800

NREL takes into consideration a candidates education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employees salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
